Listening Lessons
Einstein

Here you will find one of my free online listening lessons for English students who want to spend some time studying by themselves with online resources.

This lesson is about the life and scientific discoveries of Albert Einstein, and is based on a documentary produced by the History Channel. Most people know who Einstein was, and that he is famous for his equation E=mc2. But do you know how he did at school, what sort of job he had, and what other scientific discoveries he made?

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.

Level

This lesson is suitable for you if you are at upper-intermediate, advanced or proficiency level English (B2, C1 and C2).

Language Focus

The lesson starts with some of the lesser well known of Einstein's quotes. You will get to read them, and decide whether you agree with them or not.

Thereafter you get to watch an extract from a documentary made by the History Channel on the life of Einstein. You can practice general listening and understnanding, as well as listening for detail. The first time you watch, you need to summarize the important aspects of the story, and the second time you need to fill missing words into a gap- fill exercise.

There is also some vocabulary to learn from the gap-fill exercise.
