Free Reading Lessons

In this section you will find free reading lessons for students who want to study by themselves. If you are a student who is trying to learn English, improve your reading skills by going through these easy to use lessons that I have prepared for you.

Each lesson has the same format:

  • Start off by first completing the vocabulary exercises
  • Read through the text. Read it once through quickly, without worrying about understanding each word, but getting a general idea what the article is about. Read it through a second time, looking out for the new vocabulary words and answering the comprehension questions.
  • You will find the answers at the end of the reading lesson plan.

My free reading lessons are mainly for upper intermediate, advanced and proficiency levels. I have indicated before each lesson plan which level it is most appropriate for.

I love reading books and keeping up to date with the latest news and current events around the world. I spend much of my time reading articles on the internet and in topical magazines and newspapers. I see English lessons not only as an opportunity to learn a language, improve our communication skills, grammar and vocabulary, but also as a chance to widen our general knowledge on a wide range of subjects. The resources I choose to use for these lesson plans are the best and most interesting articles that I find, covering a large range of subjects, including travel, history, famous people, countries, politics, photography, food, current events and much, much more.

Print out the free worksheets and downloads, and work on them at your own speed. Remember to come back to the vocabulary and go through it again and again. The key to learning words and phrases is revision, revision, revision.

For more ideas on how to learn a language more effectively, look at my advice on different learning techniques and ideas on how to remember new words. Have a look through my section on recommended books and DVD’s to get some ideas on good resources that will increase your exposure to the language, while enjoying yourself at the same time.

I hope you enjoy my free reading lessons J
