Free Online English
Elephants

You can practise some free online English here, with listening, reading and new vocabulary. Elephants are fascinating animals, and I was inspired to put this lesson together after reading 'The Elephant Whisperer' (you can check out my review in Best Books).

Did you know that elephant herds can communicate with each other across hundreds of kilometres? How do they do it? What are the differences between African and Asian elephants? How much do baby calf elephants weigh when they are born? Is elephant poaching still a problem? What should you do if you are charged by an elephant? You will find the answers to these questions and many more, in this lesson.

Level

This free online English is suitable for upper intermediate, advanced and proficiency level English students (B2, C1 and C2).

Language Focus

In this lesson you will get listening and reading practice, the opportunity to give advice, learn new vocabulary, and have an opportunity to improve your writing skills.

This lesson starts off with a multiple choice quiz about elephants. You will find out some very unlikely and unusual facts about elephants while extending your vocabulary. There is a video from CBS News 60 Minutes, that investigates the sophisticated communication system that elephants have. The listening has of course new vocabulary and comprehension exercises, followed by some advice on what to do if you are charged by an elephant (information that could be very useful in the future!).

This lesson plan also has a text for you to read that looks at the issue of poaching. Poaching is still a huge problem in Africa, and the text has a look at the scale of the problem, the cause, and some possible solutions.
